Partial Differential

The Partial Differential at U+2202 is a mathematical operator used to mark differentiation with respect to one variable while other variables are held constant. It belongs to the Mathematical Operators block and is most familiar as the “curly d” in calculus and analysis. Its main use is in partial derivatives, where an expression such as ∂f/∂x means the rate of change of a multivariable function f as x changes. It appears throughout physics, engineering, economics, and statistics in formulas for gradients, heat flow, wave equations, optimization, and sensitivity analysis. The same symbol is also used in vector calculus and differential equations, including notation such as ∂²u/∂t² for a second partial derivative or ∂Ω for the boundary of a region Ω in some mathematical writing. In algebraic topology and geometry, ∂ can denote a boundary operator, mapping a shape or chain to its boundary. It should not be confused with the ordinary Latin letter d, the Greek small delta δ, or the nabla operator ∇; each has a different role in mathematical notation. In plain text, people often call it “partial,” “partial derivative symbol,” or “curly d.”
