Face with Diagonal Mouth

The Face with Diagonal Mouth at U+1FAE4 is an emoji showing a face with a slanted, uncertain mouth, used to convey mixed feelings, doubt, or mild disappointment. It belongs to the Emoticons category and is part of the Symbols and Pictographs Extended-A block. In messaging and social media, it most often works as a quick reaction to something awkward, inconvenient, or hard to answer. Someone might send it after “I guess that’s fine,” “not the news I wanted,” or “I don’t know how to feel about this,” where a stronger sad or angry face would overstate the mood. It is also used for hesitation, skepticism, or reluctant agreement, especially when a person is weighing options or responding politely while not being fully convinced. Because the expression is intentionally ambiguous, its meaning depends heavily on surrounding words; across platforms the mouth angle and eyes may make it look more uneasy, unimpressed, or conflicted.
